Russian Performance Artists in London
home is pleased to present the first UK visits for the Moscow-based
performers Marina Perchikhina and Masha Chuykova. Well known in Russia both
artists became active in the cultural and political life of Moscow during
Peristroika, taking part in 'actions' in the early nineties. In recent years
both artists have presented far more personal and reflective performances in
galleries and museums in Russia and Europe.

Marina Perchikhina
'Packaging No.5 Upakovka'
In Upakovka 5, the artist stands naked and alone in the space. Marina has
staged a series of performances titled Upakovka since 1997. The title refers
to a word that in Russian simultaneously indicates the action of packaging,
the packaging material and the final packed object, as well as a slang word
'
well packed ', meaning somebody fashionably and expensively dressed. Viewers
will follow the performance through video monitors positioned in the main
rooms downstairs. Starting with her upper body the artist wraps herself in
grey packing tape. The actions become increasingly slow and difficult as the
movements become hindered by the packaging. The only punctuations to this
painful procedure is the rhythmic crackling of the tape as it is unrolled
and
re-glued around the body. By the time the performer is 'packaged'. she
stands
as a hieratic symbol of death - like Lazarus or a mummy. A performance of
raw
power and energy the audience witnesses the artist's performance mediated
through the eye of the camera.
Marina Perchikhina is an installation, video and performance artist and
curator, and is director of the Spider and Mouse Gallery in Moscow. She has
shown her work extensively in Russia and internationally at 'It's A Better
World' Secession Wein, Austria & Art Centre of Merano, Italy and 'Rysk
Video'
SOC, Stockholm.

Masha Chuykova
'The Collective Memory of a Group of Patties' from the 'Alive Foodstuff'
series
Masha's work and performances revolve around her fascination with food and
the domestic. In this special performance at home, all the living spaces in
the house will be filled with edible creatures made from traditional
'pelmeni'
Russian ravioli. The audience will have to 'eat through' the rooms. Each
time a pattie is eaten a musical phrase will sound building up into one
piece
which will be played at the end of the hunt. An immensley enjoyable and
macabre experience the audience will become involved in a grown-up treasure
hunt throughout the house.
Masha Chuykova is a video and performance artist and curator of the TV
Gallery
in Moscow. She has shown extensively in Russia including food performances ;
'Poor Supper', 'Indian Supper', Chinese Supper', 'The Fight between Sweetr
and Salt' and internationally at at 'Video Rysk', SOC Stockholm, 'Art
Forum',
Gallery Hohenthal und Bergen, Berlin, and at the Speinkenhof Gallery ,
Hamburg.
